Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a condition that can have a significant impact on the quality of life of those who suffer from it. It is characterized by the production of sweat in excess of the body’s normal requirements to lower its temperature.

Causes of excessive sweating

Hyperhidrosis can be caused by a variety of factors. In some cases, it may be linked to underlying medical conditions, such as thyroid disorders, diabetes or certain infections. Hormonal imbalances, such as those that can occur during menopause, can also cause excessive sweating. In other cases, hyperhidrosis is caused by overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, and can therefore be aggravated by factors such as stress or strong emotions.

The areas of the body most affected

Hyperhidrosis can affect different parts of the body. The areas most commonly affected by heavy sweating are the armpits, hands, feet and face. However, hyperhidrosis can also affect other parts of the body.

Treatment of hyperhidrosis with botulinum toxin injections

So how can hyperhidrosis be treated? If traditional treatments such as deodorants or certain medications are not sufficiently effective, more advanced solutions can be considered. One such solution is the treatment of hyperhidrosis with botulinum toxin injections injections.

When injected into the skin, botulinum toxin acts on the nerves that control the sweat glands. It blocks the nerve signals that trigger sweat production, which can help reduce excessive perspiration.

Botulinum toxin can be used to treat hyperhidrosis in many areas of the body. The areas most commonly treated by our patients are the armpits, hands and feet, or other areas such as the face.

Course of a botulinum toxin treatment session

Treatment of hyperhidrosis with botulinum toxin injections in our clinics is a quick and easy procedure, carried out in the office by a specialist doctor.

Pre-session preparation

Your specialist at our aesthetic clinics in Brussels, La Hulpe or Liège will discuss your expectations with you and answer any questions you may have during a preliminary consultation. Before treatment, an anesthetic cream will be applied to the area to be treated to minimize any discomfort during the injection.

Injections

hyperhidrosisThe doctor will begin by marking the area of the patient’s skin to be treated. He will then inject the botulinum toxin using a very fine needle to minimize discomfort. Injections are generally made every 1 to 2 centimetres in the marked area.

A botulinum toxin hyperhidrosis treatment session generally lasts around 30 minutes. This may vary depending on the size of the area suffering from excessive perspiration. You can resume your daily activities immediately, but avoid sport for 24 hours.

Treatment results and follow-up

Hyperhidrosis treatment with botulinum toxin offers effective, long-lasting results in just one session.

hyperhidrosisThe effect of botulinum toxin generally begins to show in our patients two days after the injection, with a noticeable reduction in perspiration. The full effect of the treatment is generally achieved within a month of the injection. The effect of botulinum toxin treatment for hyperhidrosis generally lasts between 3 and 4 months. After this period, a further treatment session may be required.

Follow-up sessions are recommended every 4 to 6 months, depending on individual response to treatment. These sessions help maintain treatment results and effectively manage hyperhidrosis over the long term.

Contraindications

Before considering a treatment for hyperhidrosis, it is essential to be aware of the various contraindications:

  • Myasthenia (neuromuscular disease)
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Recent use of anticoagulants or anti-inflammatory drugs

It’s also important to note that botulinum toxin can interact with certain medications, notably some antibiotics. If you are taking medication, be sure to inform your doctor before starting treatment.

Side effects

Botulinum toxin injections are extremely well tolerated, but as with any medical procedure, side effects can occur. These side effects are generally mild and temporary. After treatment, you may experience slight pain or discomfort at the injection site. Some people may also develop temporary bruising or swelling. These side effects should disappear within a few days.

It is important to discuss these risks with your doctor before starting treatment. At the Claris Clinic, we are committed to providing complete and transparent information to our patients to help them make informed decisions about their health.
