How does breast augmentation work?

First step: upstream consultation

Before anything else, you and your surgeon need to discuss the upcoming operation. This first step is a time for discussion that will help you establish a relationship of trust with your surgeon for the rest of the procedure. A number of topics will be covered, including

  • Your goal: what results do you expect from this aesthetic procedure?
  • Your motivations: why do you want a breast augmentation?
  • Desired breast size: what do you want your breasts to look like?
  • Breast implants: which ones are right for you?

Here are the most important topics you’ll cover. This consultation will also be an opportunity for you to discuss any concerns you may have, as well as ask your questions about the rest of the procedure.

Second stage: the operation

Once the first consultation is over, you can decide to move on to the second stage: the operation. Under general anaesthetic this aesthetic breast surgery lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Your surgeon will make an incision in your armpits, under the breasts or in the nipples. Next, he will place the breast forms either in front of or behind your pectoral muscles. All these elements are obviously discussed in advance during the preliminary consultation.

Our team will then supervise you in our recovery room. Once the operation is over, all that remains is to discuss the next steps with your surgeon.

Third stage: post-operative care

After the operation, it is important to take the time to discuss with the surgeon the good reflexes with the surgeon who operated on you. He can advise you on recover as quickly as possible. Prohibited activities, post-operative care, symptoms… these are just some of the topics that will be covered during this special event.

You can also make an appointment with our specialist for future consultations to check that healing is going well, and that your body and breasts are adapting well to the prosthesis. The surgeon will eventually be able to detect if there are any possible implant leaks or ruptures.

Which prostheses for breast augmentation in Liège?

Choose the shape and material of your breast forms

There are three types of prosthesis to choose from before the operation, according to your preferences and the advice of one of our surgeons.

  • The round implant is, as its name suggests, shaped like a half-sphere. It enhances décolleté and offers unequalled symmetry. However, it is less natural than other prostheses, and presents risks of rotation.
  • The ergonomic implant is also spherical, but less full, allowing it to adapt to the natural shape of the patient’s chest and breasts. It also reduces the risk of prosthesis rotation.
  • The anatomical implant is shaped like a teardrop to match the natural shape of the patient’s breasts as closely as possible. This is the solution for those who want the most natural result possible.

In terms of materials, we only work with silicone prostheses. This is the most common implant, as it has a natural look and feel. However, ruptures are difficult to detect and there is a risk of rotation.

Talk to our specialist about breast shape you’d like to achieve after the operation. Expert advice is essential, as not all implants are suitable for all body shapes. That’s why at the Claris Clinic in Liège, we take the time to talk with you to make sure that your breast enlargement will be in harmony with your figure.

Choose the volume of your implants

Whether you want a low, medium, high or very high projection, the volume of the silicone implant will be different. It therefore depends on the result you want, in terms of shape, breast size or cleavage depth.

The volume of our breast implants ranges from 250 cc to 600 cc for the largest sizes. For example:

  • From A to B cup: 250-300 cc implant.
  • Upgrade from A to D cup: implant from 370 to 430 cc.
  • Upgrade from D to E cup: implant from 450 to 600 cc.

Of course, these sizes don’t suit everyone or every body type. Our surgeon will guide you to avoid any complications in the future, such as posture problems due to overly heavy breasts.

Implant placement during surgery

During the procedure, once the incision has been made, the surgeon will place the implants chosen beforehand. Three methods are available:

  • Implant in front of the pectoral muscle: This is the simplest and most common method, since it does not require lifting the muscle to place the prosthesis behind it.
  • The implant under the pectoral muscle: Unlike the first, this technique is considered more difficult and is reserved for patients with little breast tissue. In this case, the prosthesis is placed behind the muscle.
  • The double plane also known as “dual plane”: a combination of the first two methods, this involves placing the prosthesis partially under the pectoral muscle for a natural effect.

Lifespan of breast implants

Breast liftIn general 10 to 15 years breast prostheses are generally not changed frequently. Here are a few reasons why you might want to change your implant early:

  • A desire for change: some patients want to change their prosthesis shape or volume for aesthetic reasons, which is why they return to the Claris Clinic.
  • Implant complications: the prosthesis may leak or turn inside out. In this case, too, you should see your surgeon as soon as possible.

Some patients also want to remove their implants and return to completely natural breasts, which also requires surgery. In fact, silicone implants are sometimes just a transitional stage and a way of overcoming certain complexes.
