The procedure
Average duration: between 1 hour 30 and 2 hours 30.
A breast reduction is carried out as follows:
The surgeon removes excess skin and glandular tissue and then reshapes the remaining tissue to obtain a good positioning of the breasts.
The sutures form the scars in the shape of an inverted T (around the areola, between the areola and the inframammary fold and in the inframammary fold). In some cases, the (horizontal) fold scar is not necessary. At the end of the procedure, a bra-shaped bandage is applied.
After the procedure
The postoperative effects of a breast reduction are generally not very painful, although an oedema (swelling) and ecchymoses (bruises) may appear and discomfort can be felt when raising the arms.
The bandage is changed between the 5th and 7th day and replaced by a bra without underwire, to be worn for 4 to 6 weeks, night and day. The suture threads are removed around the 14th day after the procedure. Work can be resumed between the 8th and 15th day, depending on the type of professional activity.
The result
A term of one year is necessary to appreciate the result of a breast reduction, the time it takes for the scars to fade. In addition to the local improvement, this procedure generally has a beneficial effect on weight balance, sports practice and choice of clothing.
